CMHA Kamloops requests homeless shuttle expansion as temperatures drop
Shuttle service would provide transportation to warming centres, shelters
As temperatures in Kamloops continue to drop, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) is requesting the expansion of the city's homeless shuttle service.
Shuttle would provide essential transportation
The shuttle service would provide transportation to warming centres and shelters for people experiencing homelessness, who are particularly vulnerable to the cold weather.
CMHA Kamloops CEO Alfred Achoba said the service is especially important given the recent cold snap, which has seen temperatures drop below -10 degrees Celsius.
"We're really concerned about the health and safety of people who are living on the streets during this cold weather," Achoba said in a statement. "This shuttle service would provide a vital lifeline for them, helping them to get to where they can get warm and safe."
The shuttle would operate seven days a week, with extended hours during extreme cold weather.
The CMHA is asking the City of Kamloops to provide funding for the shuttle service.
The city has not yet made a decision on whether to fund the service.
