Collingwood town council approves Christmas tree as official floral emblem
Council votes 4-1 to change town’s official emblem
Residents weigh in on symbolic importance of tree
The Collingwood town council has voted to replace the town’s official floral emblem, the trillium flower, with the Christmas tree. The decision was made at a council meeting on Monday night, with a vote of 4-1 in favor of the change.
The proposal to change the town’s floral emblem was first introduced by Mayor Brian Saunderson at a council meeting in August. He argued that the Christmas tree was a more recognizable and iconic symbol of the town’s identity than the trillium flower, which is also the provincial flower of Ontario.
“The Christmas tree is a symbol of the holiday season, which is a time of great joy and celebration in our community,” said Saunderson. “It is also a symbol of the town’s strong sense of community spirit.”
