Dutch superstar Reiziger takes over as Netherlands U21 coach

Ex-Real Madrid, Barcelona defender replaces Art Langeler

Former Netherlands international Michael Reiziger has been appointed as the coach of the Netherlands U21 team. Reiziger, who played for Real Madrid and Barcelona during his club career, will replace Art Langeler, who left the position in July.

The 50-year-old Reiziger has been working as an assistant coach at Ajax since 2019. He has also had spells as manager of Jong Ajax and the Netherlands U17 team.

Reiziger is a highly respected figure in Dutch football. He made over 70 appearances for the Netherlands national team and won the Champions League with Real Madrid in 1998.

His appointment as U21 coach is seen as a major coup for the Dutch FA. Reiziger is expected to bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role.

The Netherlands U21 team is currently preparing for the UEFA European Championship, which will be held in Romania and Georgia in June 2023.

Reiziger's first match in charge will be a friendly against England U21 at the Den Bosch Stadion on 23 March.

Reiziger said he is "honoured" to have been appointed as U21 coach.

"I am looking forward to working with this talented group of players and helping them to achieve their potential," he said.

Technical director Nico-Jan Hoogma said Reiziger is the "ideal candidate" for the role.

"He has a proven track record of success at both club and international level," said Hoogma.

"We are confident that he can help our U21 team to achieve great things."
