Gov. Gottheimer, Sherrill Announce Legislation To Protect Abortion Rights in New Jersey

In response to the Supreme Court's ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, Governor Phil Murphy, Congressman Josh Gottheimer, and Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill announced legislation to protect abortion rights in New Jersey.

The legislation would codify the right to abortion into state law, ensuring that access to reproductive healthcare remains protected in New Jersey, regardless of the Supreme Court's decision.

Governor Murphy stated, "We will not stand idly by as the Supreme Court takes away the rights of women and their doctors. We in New Jersey believe that every woman has the right to make decisions about her own body, including whether or not to have an abortion."

Congressman Gottheimer said, "This is a dark day for our country, but we will not let the Supreme Court take away the rights of women in New Jersey. We will fight to protect access to abortion and ensure that women have the freedom to make decisions about their own bodies."

Congresswoman Sherrill added, "This legislation is essential to protecting the rights of women in New Jersey. We will not allow the Supreme Court to turn back the clock on reproductive rights. We will fight to ensure that all women have access to the healthcare they need."

The legislation is expected to be introduced in the New Jersey Legislature in the coming days. It is expected to pass with strong bipartisan support.

In addition to the legislation, Governor Murphy also announced that he will be directing state agencies to take steps to protect access to abortion in New Jersey. These steps include:

Ensuring that state employees have access to abortion services through their health insurance plans.
Providing funding for abortion services for low-income women.
Expanding access to abortion services at state-run clinics.

Governor Murphy said, "We are taking these steps to ensure that access to abortion remains protected in New Jersey, regardless of the Supreme Court's ruling. We will not let the Supreme Court take away the rights of women in New Jersey."
