Greta Thunberg Leads Climate Protest Against Azerbaijan's Hosting of Summit
Climate Activist Voices Concerns Over Human Rights and Oil Dependency
Summit Venue Accused of Greenwashing
Youth climate activist Greta Thunberg joined other protesters outside the COP27 summit venue in Egypt on Monday, to protest Azerbaijan's hosting of the event. Despite Azerbaijan's status as a major oil producer, the country has been accused of greenwashing and human rights abuses. Thunberg and other activists called for the removal of Azerbaijan as host of COP28, demanding that the summit be held in a country with a stronger record on climate action and human rights.
Thunberg's protest highlights the growing concern among climate activists that the COP process is being hijacked by countries with poor environmental records. Azerbaijan has been criticized for its continued reliance on fossil fuels, its lack of progress on reducing emissions, and its suppression of dissent.
The COP27 summit is taking place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6-18. The summit brings together world leaders, policymakers, and climate experts to discuss the global response to climate change. This year's summit is particularly important, as it is the first since the adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015.
