Family of man shot and killed by Las Vegas police condemns police
The family of a man who was shot and killed by Las Vegas police last week has condemned the police department, saying they are "disgusted" by the way their loved one was treated.
The man, identified as 40-year-old Jorge Gomez, was shot and killed by police on Thursday, June 10, after he allegedly pointed a gun at officers.
According to the police, Gomez was driving a stolen car when he was pulled over by officers.
When officers approached the car, Gomez allegedly reached for a gun in the center console.
Officers ordered Gomez to drop the gun, but he refused.
One officer then fired a single shot, striking Gomez in the chest.
Gomez was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
Family says Gomez was not armed
The family of Jorge Gomez has disputed the police account of the shooting, saying that Gomez was not armed and that he was shot in the back.
"My brother was not armed," said Jorge's sister, Maria Gomez. "He was shot in the back. The police are lying."
Police investigation ongoing
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating the shooting.
The department has not released any body camera footage of the incident.
Community protests
The shooting of Jorge Gomez has sparked protests in Las Vegas.
Protesters have marched through the streets, calling for justice for Gomez and an end to police brutality.
