Italian Regional Elections 2024: Live Results and News
Voters Cast Ballots in Umbria and Emilia-Romagna
Polls opened at 7 am on Sunday, February 25, 2024, for regional elections in Umbria and Emilia-Romagna. Voters in both regions are choosing new presidents and regional councils.
In Umbria, the incumbent president, Donatella Tesei of the right-wing Brothers of Italy party, is seeking a second term. Her main challengers include Vincenzo Bianconi of the center-left Democratic Party and Claudio Ricci of the Five Star Movement.
In Emilia-Romagna, the incumbent president, Stefano Bonaccini of the center-left Democratic Party, is also seeking re-election. His main challengers include Lucia Borgonzoni of the right-wing League party and Simone Benini of the Five Star Movement.
Voter Turnout
Voter turnout is expected to be low in both regions, as has been the trend in recent years. In the 2019 regional elections, turnout was 53.4% in Umbria and 68.2% in Emilia-Romagna.
Former Prime Minister Romano Prodi has expressed concern about the declining voter turnout. "It has been declining for years," he said. "This is a serious problem for our democracy."
Polls Close at 3 pm
Polls will close at 3 pm on Sunday, and the first exit polls are expected shortly after. The final results are expected to be announced late on Sunday evening or early on Monday morning.
