Joshua Wong Shouts ‘I Love Hong Kong’ as 47 Pro-Democracy Figures Sentenced to Prison

Hong Kong Court Hands Down Lengthy Sentences to Pro-Democracy Leaders

On April 6, 2023, Hong Kong's High Court handed down prison sentences to 47 pro-democracy leaders, including Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow, and Ivan Lam. This marks the end of a mass trial that lasted over a year and captured international attention as a sign of the ongoing crackdown on dissent in Hong Kong.

Wong, leader of the Demosisto party, was sentenced to 10 months and 2 weeks in prison for his role in organizing the "ThunderGo" rally in 2019. Other prominent activists, such as Agnes Chow and Ivan Lam, received sentences of 10 months and 8 months, respectively.

Defendants Sentenced in the Mass Trial

The sentences handed down reflect the escalating repression of political dissent in Hong Kong. The city's national security law, imposed by China in 2020, has been used to stifle opposition and criminalize peaceful protests.

The trial and sentencing of these activists have drawn condemnation from human rights groups and Western governments. The United States and the United Kingdom have expressed concern over the erosion of freedoms in Hong Kong.

International Condemnation of the Sentences

The international community has expressed its concern and condemnation of the sentences handed down to the pro-democracy activists. The United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union have all issued statements criticizing the suppression of dissent in Hong Kong.

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said the sentences are "a further blow to Hong Kong's freedoms and the rule of law." He added that the US stands with the people of Hong Kong and their aspirations for democracy and autonomy.

The UK Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, called the sentences "deeply troubling" and said they "represent a further erosion of Hong Kong's freedoms." He urged China to respect Hong Kong's autonomy and its people's right to freedom of expression and assembly.
