Devin Skenes wins NL Rookie of the Year
Devin Skenes of the Arizona Diamondbacks was named the National League Rookie of the Year on Monday night. Skenes, a 24-year-old catcher, batted .281 with 20 home runs and 60 RBIs in 125 games this season. He also threw out 30% of potential base stealers. Skenes is the first Diamondbacks player to win the Rookie of the Year award since Paul Goldschmidt in 2013.
Skenes beat out fellow finalists Oneil Cruz of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Spencer Strider of the Atlanta Braves. Cruz batted .294 with 20 home runs and 60 RBIs in 126 games this season, while Strider went 11-5 with a 2.67 ERA and 166 strikeouts in 131.2 innings.
Julio Rodriguez wins AL Rookie of the Year
Julio Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners was named the American League Rookie of the Year on Monday night. Rodriguez, a 21-year-old outfielder, batted .284 with 28 home runs and 75 RBIs in 132 games this season. He also stole 25 bases.
Rodriguez beat out fellow finalists Adley Rutschman of the Baltimore Orioles and Jeremy Pena of the Houston Astros. Rutschman batted .254 with 13 home runs and 42 RBIs in 113 games this season, while Pena batted .253 with 22 home runs and 63 RBIs in 136 games.
