Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes and New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil won the 2024 National League and American League Rookie of the Year awards, respectively.

Skenes, 22, went 12-6 with a 3.21 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 157 strikeouts in 171 innings pitched over 28 starts. He also threw two complete games and one shutout.

Gil, 23, went 11-6 with a 3.35 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 144 strikeouts in 163 innings pitched over 27 starts. He also threw one complete game and one shutout.

Both Skenes and Gil were impressive in their rookie seasons, and they are expected to be key pieces in their teams' rotations for years to come.

Skenes was drafted by the Pirates with the 10th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. He spent the 2023 season at Double-A Altoona, where he went 9-4 with a 2.75 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 127 strikeouts in 100 innings pitched over 18 starts.

Gil was signed by the Yankees as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2017. He spent the 2023 season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he went 8-4 with a 3.51 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 103 strikeouts in 94 innings pitched over 17 starts.

Skenes and Gil are the first pitchers to win the Rookie of the Year award in the same season since Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer did so in 2006.
