Lesotho put up a valiant fight, but Morocco's quality prevails
Oujda, Morocco - Morocco's national football team extended their unbeaten streak in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lesotho at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda on Thursday.
The Atlas Lions, led by coach Walid Regragui, dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities throughout the match. Their efforts were rewarded in the 12th minute when Zakaria Aboukhlal broke the deadlock with a well-taken goal.
Lesotho showed great resilience and determination, equalizing just before halftime through a stunning strike from Motebang Sera. The second half was a tense affair, with both teams pushing for a winning goal.
Morocco eventually regained the lead in the 62nd minute, courtesy of a powerful header from defender Jawad El Yamiq. Despite Lesotho's best efforts, they were unable to find an equalizer, and Morocco secured a valuable three points.
The victory keeps Morocco top of Group C with 10 points from four matches. They are well-positioned to qualify for the AFCON finals, which will be held in Ivory Coast next year.
Lesotho, on the other hand, remain at the bottom of the group with no points from four matches. Their hopes of reaching the AFCON finals are all but over.
Morocco will face South Africa in their next qualifier match on June 13, while Lesotho will host Liberia on the same day.
