NHL Referee Hospitalized Following Violent Collision During Philadelphia Flyers Game
Linesman Ryan Gibbons Taken to Hospital After Being Hit by Flyers' Ivan Provorov
Gibbons Conscious and Alert, Undergoing Further Evaluation
Linesman Ryan Gibbons was hospitalized after a violent collision with Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov during Tuesday night's game against the Anaheim Ducks.
With just over 11 minutes remaining in the third period and the Flyers leading 5-2, Provorov attempted to clear the puck from the Flyers' zone. However, he collided with Gibbons, who was positioned near the blue line. The impact sent Gibbons flying into the boards.
Gibbons was immediately attended to by medical staff and was taken off the ice on a stretcher. He was conscious and alert but was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
The NHL Department of Player Safety announced on Wednesday that it will review the incident. Provorov was not penalized on the play.
Gibbons, 34, is in his 10th season as an NHL linesman. He has worked over 500 regular-season games and 50 playoff games.
The Flyers released a statement on Wednesday wishing Gibbons a speedy recovery. The Ducks also tweeted their support for Gibbons.
