Lisbon, Portugal - Portugal were held to a goalless draw by Croatia in their UEFA Nations League opener on Saturday, in a match that saw Cristiano Ronaldo make his 196th international appearance for his country.
Roberto Martínez's first game in charge of Portugal ended in a stalemate, as his side failed to break down a resolute Croatian defence. Croatia had the better chances in the first half, with Andrej Kramarić and Luka Modrić both going close.
Portugal improved after the break and Ronaldo had a great chance to win it late on, but his header was saved by Dominik Livaković.
The draw leaves Portugal third in Group A3, behind Croatia and Spain. They will next face the Czech Republic in Prague on Tuesday.
Reaction from Roberto Martínez
"I think we can be satisfied with the performance, but not with the result," said Martínez. "We created chances, but we didn't take them. We need to be more clinical in front of goal."
Reaction from Cristiano Ronaldo
"It was a difficult game," said Ronaldo. "Croatia are a very good team and they made it difficult for us. We had some chances, but we couldn't score. We need to keep working hard and improving."
