Voting underway in the Lazio regional elections
The polls reopened at 7 a.m. and will close at 3 p.m.
The Lazio regional elections are underway, with polls reopening at 7 a.m. and closing at 3 p.m. Over 5 million voters are eligible to cast their ballots for the regional president and the 50 members of the regional council.
The main candidates for the presidency are Alessio D'Amato, supported by the centre-left coalition, Francesco Rocca, supported by the centre-right coalition, and Donatella Bianchi, supported by the Five Star Movement.
The election is seen as a test for the national government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The centre-right coalition is hoping to gain control of the Lazio region, which has been governed by the centre-left for the past 10 years.
The polls will close at 3 p.m., and the first exit polls are expected shortly after. The final results of the election are expected to be announced on Monday.
