Scotland squad rocked by two withdrawals as former Celtic star returns from international exile

McTominay and Patterson out, Taylor back in

Scotland have been dealt a double injury blow with Scott McTominay and Nathan Patterson ruled out of the upcoming Nations League matches against Ukraine and the Republic of Ireland.

Manchester United midfielder McTominay has withdrawn from the squad with a minor muscle injury, while Rangers defender Patterson is out with an ankle problem.

The news comes as a blow to Scotland manager Steve Clarke, who is already without a number of key players for the crucial matches.

However, Clarke has been boosted by the return of former Celtic defender Kieran Tierney, who has been recalled to the squad after missing the recent matches against Armenia and Turkey through injury.

Tierney has been in impressive form for Arsenal this season and his return will be a welcome boost for Scotland.

Scotland face Ukraine in a crucial Nations League match at Hampden Park on Wednesday, September 21, before travelling to Dublin to face the Republic of Ireland three days later.

Clarke's side are currently bottom of their Nations League group and need to win both matches to have any chance of avoiding relegation to League B.

The matches will also be Scotland's last two before the World Cup in Qatar, which starts in November.

Clarke is expected to name his full squad for the matches on Monday.

Reaction

Scotland manager Steve Clarke said: "It's a blow to lose Scott and Nathan, but I'm confident that we have the players in the squad to cope with their absence.

"Kieran's return is a boost and I'm looking forward to working with him again.

"We have two important matches coming up and we need to be at our best to get the results we need.

Former Scotland international Kenny Dalglish said: "It's a shame to lose Scott and Nathan, but I'm sure Kieran will be a good addition to the squad.

"He's a quality player and he'll be keen to make up for lost time.

"Scotland have a tough task ahead of them, but I'm confident that they can get the results they need."
