Texas Supreme Court Paves Way for Execution in ‘Shaken Baby’ Case
Assistant District Attorney Lisa Tanner Refuses to Back Down
Assistant District Attorney Lisa Tanner has been fighting for nearly two decades to uphold the death penalty for John Henry Ramirez, a man convicted of killing his four-month-old son in 2004. On Tuesday, the Texas Supreme Court ruled in favor of Tanner, clearing the way for Ramirez to be executed.
John Henry Ramirez Maintains Innocence
Ramirez has always maintained his innocence, and his lawyers have argued that he deserves a new trial because his trial attorneys failed to present evidence that could have helped his case. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals agreed with Ramirez's lawyers and ordered a new trial in 2017, but the Texas Supreme Court overturned that decision.
Tanner Says Justice Will Be Served
Tanner said she is confident that justice will be served when Ramirez is executed. "This is a case about a man who brutally murdered his four-month-old son," Tanner said. "The jury heard the evidence and found him guilty, and the Texas Supreme Court has now upheld that verdict. It's time for justice to be served."
