US. Department of State Condemns Censorship, Supports Freedom of Speech
State Department Spokesperson Ned Price held a press briefing on Thursday, strongly condemning censorship and expressing support for freedom of speech.
Price emphasized the importance of a free and open press in a democratic society, stating that it is "essential for holding governments accountable, informing the public, and promoting transparency. "
He added that the department is "deeply concerned" about reports of censorship and suppression of independent media in various countries and pledged to continue supporting journalists and human rights defenders who are working to protect freedom of speech.
Price also addressed the issue of disinformation, calling it "a threat to democracy and a danger to public health." He said that the department is working with partners to combat disinformation and promote credible information.
In response to a question about the department's efforts to promote freedom of speech around the world, Price said that the department uses a variety of tools, including issuing statements, engaging with foreign governments, and supporting civil society organizations that are working to promote freedom of expression.
He added that the department is also working to strengthen the capacity of journalists and media outlets in countries where freedom of speech is under threat.
