Why Did Caleb Martin Turn Down Heat’s Offer and Take Less Money to Join 76ers? Martin Explains
Caleb Martin made a surprising decision to turn down a bigger offer from the Miami Heat in order to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Martin, a 26-year-old wing, had been a key part of the Heat's rotation during the past two seasons, averaging 9.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
After the season ended, the Heat reportedly offered Martin a three-year, $20 million contract, while the 76ers offered a two-year, $10 million deal.
So why did Martin choose to take less money to join the 76ers?
In an interview with ESPN, Martin said that he believes the 76ers are a better fit for him at this stage of his career.
The 76ers are coming off a disappointing season, but they have a young and talented roster, led by Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
Martin said he believes he can play a bigger role in Philadelphia than he would have in Miami.
"I think I can be a really good player here," Martin said. "I think I can help this team win games."
Martin also said he was impressed by 76ers coach Doc Rivers.
"He's a great coach," Martin said. "He's a players' coach. I think he's going to help me get to the next level."
The Heat are reportedly disappointed that Martin chose to leave, but they wish him well.
"We're disappointed that Caleb decided to sign with another team," Heat president Pat Riley said in a statement. "But we wish him all the best in his future endeavors."
The 76ers are excited to have Martin on their team, and they believe he can be a valuable contributor.
"We're thrilled to have Caleb join our team," Rivers said. "He's a tough, physical player who can shoot it and defend. We think he's going to be a great fit for us."
