Dutch enjoy Nations League win in San Marino
Relief for Van Gaal after Dutch end winless run with a 0-2 victory over San Marino
Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo on target as the Netherlands earn their first win in the Nations League
The Netherlands ended their three-game winless run in the Nations League with a 0-2 victory over San Marino on Saturday. Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo scored the goals in Serravalle, as the Dutch claimed their first points in Group A3.
The Netherlands started the match strongly and took the lead in the 10th minute. Depay was on hand to tap in from close range after Denzel Dumfries had nodded the ball across the face of goal. Gakpo doubled the lead in the 54th minute when he finished off a flowing move involving Steven Bergwijn and Depay.
The Netherlands had a number of chances to extend their lead, but they were unable to take them. Depay hit the crossbar in the first half, while Gakpo and Bergwijn both had chances to score in the second half. However, the Dutch were comfortable in the end, and they saw out the game without any problems.
The win was a much-needed boost for the Netherlands, who had lost their previous three matches in the Nations League. It also provided some relief for coach Louis van Gaal, who had come under pressure after the team's poor start to the campaign.
The Netherlands will now look to build on this win when they face Poland in their next match on Tuesday. Poland are currently top of Group A3, with four points from two matches.
