McMann goes five-hole to force OT
Terriers legend makes history as most penalized player in Division I women’s hockey history
In a thrilling Beanpot opener, Boston University sophomore defenseman Alex McMann netted a historic power-play goal with just seconds remaining in regulation, sending the game into overtime against Northeastern on Tuesday night at Matthews Arena.
With the Terriers down 2-1 and time winding down in the final period, McMann took a pass from sophomore forward Julia Shaunessy and fired a shot past Huskies senior goaltender Gwyneth Philips. It was McMann's first goal of the season and the 10th of her career.
The goal was even more impressive considering McMann was playing on a broken foot. She suffered the injury in a game against Maine on Jan. 28, but she decided to play through the pain in the Beanpot.
McMann’s heroics forced overtime, but Northeastern eventually won the game 3-2 in the extra period. Still, McMann’s performance was a bright spot for the Terriers. She finished the game with a goal, an assist, and two penalty minutes.
McMann’s five-hole goal was a thing of beauty. She faked a shot and then quickly moved the puck to her backhand, catching Philips off guard. It was a goal that will be remembered for years to come.
In addition to her goal, McMann also made history on Tuesday night. She became the most penalized player in Division I women’s hockey history. She now has 328 penalty minutes in her career, surpassing the previous record of 324 set by Boston College’s Kelli Stack.
McMann’s penalty minutes are a testament to her aggressive style of play. She is not afraid to throw her body around and block shots.
McMann is a valuable member of the Terriers. She is a physical presence on the ice, and she can also contribute offensively. She is a player who can make a difference in a game.
The Terriers will need McMann to continue to play well if they want to make a deep run in the Beanpot. They will face Harvard in the semifinals on Wednesday night.
