Santa Barbara Council Approves $96 Million Contract for New Police Station
City Council greenlights construction of new state-of-the-art facility
Project to address overcrowding, enhance safety for officers and community
The Santa Barbara City Council has approved a $96 million contract for the construction of a new police station, marking a significant milestone in the city’s efforts to improve public safety and provide a modern, efficient workspace for its police force.
The new station, which will replace the city’s current aging and overcrowded facility, will be located at 333 E. Ortega St. The state-of-the-art complex will feature a two-story, 52,000-square-foot building designed to enhance safety and security for both officers and the community.
The new station will include dedicated spaces for patrol operations, investigations, training, and community engagement. It will also feature modern evidence storage facilities, a fitness center, and a dedicated space for the city’s 911 dispatch center.
The project, which is expected to be completed in 2026, will be funded through a combination of Measure C sales tax revenue and developer fees. The city estimates that the new station will save taxpayers approximately $1 million annually in maintenance and operating costs compared to the current facility.
The City Council’s approval of the contract follows an extensive public outreach process that included community meetings, online surveys, and stakeholder engagement. The project has received widespread support from residents, businesses, and community organizations.
The new police station is part of the city’s ongoing commitment to public safety and community well-being. The facility will provide a safe and efficient workplace for the city's police officers, allowing them to better serve and protect the community.
Mayor Randy Rowse said, "This new police station is a testament to our city’s commitment to public safety. It will provide our police officers with the resources and facilities they need to keep our community safe and secure.”
Police Chief Lori Luhnow added, "This new station will be a game-changer for the Santa Barbara Police Department. It will provide us with the space and technology we need to effectively serve and protect our community."
